Le Centerpiece is proud to present Mise en Abyme, an exhibition of paintings by Canadian artist Brian Rideout, curated by Erika Del Vecchio. Marking the artist’s return to Montreal since 2017, the exhibition is the first dedicated to painting in Le Centerpiece’s new space.

Selected from Rideout’s American Collection Paintings series, the works explore the relationship between art, design, and the interiors in which they coexist. Drawing from photographs of private collections, Rideout transforms these spaces into carefully composed paintings where masterpieces of modern art share the stage with iconic furniture and decorative objects. Each composition reveals an aesthetic universe shaped by the collector’s eye, inviting us to consider the home as a personal expression of art.

The title Mise en Abyme refers to the art-historical concept of an image contained within another image. Here, this notion takes on a playful dimension: paintings depicting carefully curated interiors are displayed among Le Centerpiece’s own collection of rare vintage and second-hand designer furniture. The objects and forms depicted in Rideout’s paintings subtly resonate with those inhabiting Le Centerpiece, blurring the boundaries between representation and reality.

In one particularly evocative composition, Concetto spaziale, Attese by Lucio Fontana shares the scene with the Low Back Chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller in 1958, and a Thonet table from the late 1980s, bringing together icons of twentieth-century art and design. Through Rideout’s interpretation, these pieces become part of a new artwork, inviting us to reconsider the boundaries between collecting, design, and the art of living.
